Variance Design created several multi-function exhibits for the Reptile Discovery Center at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC. Our objective was to create new exhibits that are both adaptable in purpose and can stand up to the wear placed on them by nearly two million guests per year.

The variety of habitats these fauna call home gave us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the flexibility, durability, and ingenuity of our decor sculpting process. DC’s most pampered reptiles and amphibians now find themselves in startlingly convincing scenes ranging from a red-sanded desert to a vibrant green bamboo grove. Highlights also include a subterranean den, featuring a cutaway wall opening directly onto the display glass.
