Variance Design worked on two projects for the Smithsonian Institute, one at The National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and another for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute at the Punta Culebra Nature Center in Panama. The exhibits both feature large, hexagonal walk around terrariums with hand shaped, artificial tree buttresses and live plants, creating habitats for a variety of amphibians including the critically endangered Panamanian Golden Toad. In addition to the large feature exhibits, three smaller hexagonal terrariums were created for both locations.
